Happy Trails, Eric Byrnes

Eric Brynes, we've always liked your surfer look and sweet shades. Absolutely no one can rock the socks with sandals look quite like you, and for that, we'd like to high five you so hard that your hand stings for a whole day.

Only you could bounce back from those bad hair days on Baseball Tonight to bring us unconventional highlights from a kayak in McCovey Cove. Along with your faithful dog Bruin, you showed off your regular Joe fandom while other guys enjoyed playing in the 2007 All-Star Game. If only they knew how much fun you were having out there...

But way back in the day, we loved your hustle: those sweet diving grabs and shoe-string catches. And yes, we kept on loving you straight through the ups and downs. While the baseball world is very much looking forward to your unusual, yet sure-to-be entertaining broadcasting contributions, your buddies are looking forward to that right-handed bat roaming left field in beer league softball even more. Maybe you'll step up your game and bring a couple of sweet demarini baseball bats to the new field.

Eric Byrnes is on the Comeback Trail

I'm so awesome. My dog is awesome, too.
We've more or less been looking for an excuse to post this rad picture of Eric Byrnes, and I think we've been given one.

The Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder was taken off the 15-day disabled list Monday and penciled in to lead off against the Boston Red Sox.

Byrnes went 0-for-5 with a strikeout. Back to normal, I see.

Out of Commission

Sometimes there are so many injuries at once that we have to roll them all up into one big post and call it Out of Commission. So here we go.

Shef is angry and has an owie on his shoulderLet's start with everyone's favorite, fun-loving guy, Gary Sheffield. The Detroit Tigers designated hitter was placed Tuesday due to perpetual orneriness and an oblique strain on his left side.

Sheff hurt himself running out a grounder to short in the third inning of Monday's game against the Los Angeles Angels, making it just halfway down the line before grabbing his side and being replaced by a younger, more cheerful pinch-hitter in the sixth.

In other Motor City news, Carlos Guillen has hemorrhoids and Jim Leyland would like to tell the world.

Eric ByrnesMoving right along, Eric Byrnes has landed on the disabled list . The Arizona Diamondbacks left-fielder has lost some of his trademark hustle after experiencing relentless soreness in his hamstrings.

Prior to the move on Tuesday, Byrnes was batting just .219 with six homers and 23 RBIs, but decided to be a man and not blame his poor performance at the plate on his rusty legs.

While running drills with center fielder Chris Young a few days before Spring Training, Byrnes felt a tweak in his hammy. After over-compensating with his other leg, that one eventually began to hurt, and the rest is history.

Pronk is hurtingThe Cleveland Indians may place designated hitter and all-around monster Travis Hafner on the DL after he rode the bench for the second straight game Tuesday night with a sore right shoulder.

This will surely cover up what appears to be a season-long slump for Pronk. He's batting .217 with four homers and 22 RBIs over the first 46 games, and is currently enduring a 10-for-42 slide in his last 15 games. Hey, injuries are always a great way to save face!

Eric Byrnes Doesn't Have a Girlfriend

For those of you who watched the All-Star game Tuesday night, you were treated to non-All-Star Eric Byrnes, all soggy in McCovey Cove with his dog, Bruin.
"You don’t want to get in a fight with me out here guys... I’m pretty intense tonight," Byrnes declared from his kayak.
We love a man who loves his dog, but we almost missed Ichiro's inside-the-parker because the canine-obsessed cameraman was zeroed in on the pup for roughly five minutes, for crying out loud.

*Editor's note: Eric Byrnes may or may not have a girlfriend. For the record, he happens to be one of our favorite characters in the game and one whose balls we like to bust.

Byrnes Reaches Deal With D'backs

The Arizona Diamondbacks have met with Eric Byrnes on a one-year, $4.575 million contract Tuesday, avoiding arbitration with their acrobatic outfielder.

Byrnes, 30, hit .267 and set career highs with 26 homers and 79 RBI in his first season with Arizona last year. He also stole a career high 25 bases and matched his best stamina with 143 games played.

Byrnes became the first D'backs player to hit 25 bombs and steal 25 bags in the same season and even appeared on Baseball Tonight, sans hair-dresser, during the 2006 playoffs.

Byrnes has a career .261 batting average with 74 home runs and 259 RBI over parts of seven seasons with the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies and Arizona.
