Aaron Miles Forgot How To Field... and Throw

Aaron Miles sucked at baseball yesterday.Seriously. Who commits three errors in a game, let alone a single inning?

Aaron Miles, replacement to bellicose World Series MVP David Eckstein, does.

The switch-hitting shortstop, no bigger than 5'8" and 185 pounds soaking wet, made two throwing errors and screwed up an easy fielding play in the seventh inning Saturday as the St. Louis Cardinals lost a 7-6 heart-breaker to the San Francisco Giants.

First, Miles threw high and pulled Albert Pujols off the bag, allowing a run to score. Two batters later, Randy Winn's grounder sneaked under his glove and two runs scored. The third error came on the next batter, when Ray Durham reached on a poor one-hopper to Pujols at first.

However fittingly, Eckstein is the last St. Louis shortstop to accomplish the feat and did so on May 22, 2005 against the Kansas City Royals.

Primarily a second baseman (no excuse) Miles has spent most of his time at short since Eckstein went out of commission on June 14th with a lower back injury. Miles is batting .289 on the year with 0 homers and 14 RBIs.

Fun facts from Elias: the big league record for errors in an inning is four and last occurred by Chicago Cubs shortstop Lou Merullo in 1942.
