Curtis Granderson Powers Tigers Past Blue Jays

Curtis Granderson hit his first career grand slam as Detroit built a nine-run lead Wednesday, almost collapsing late in the game, but held on for a 10-9 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Coming off their first pennant since 1984, and after losing Monday's opener 5-3 in extra innings, Detroit got to A.J. Burnett early in what turned out to be one of the shortest outings of his career. He gave up six runs, five hits and four walks in two-plus innings, leaving after Detroit's first six batters reached in the third.

Granderson connected for a grand salami off Shaun Marcum for his first homer of the season, capping an eight-run third with a drive that bounced on top of the right-center wall, hitting the yellow home-run line, before landing back onto the field. Then, in the seventh inning, he nailed an RBI triple off Victor Zambrano, back from elbow surgery, that tied his career-high with five RBIs in a game.

Toronto ended up with seven runs in the eighth off relievers Jason Grilli and Fernando Rodney, but the potential tying run was stranded at third when Magglio Ordonez, who lost two fly balls earlier in the inning, made a running catch to nab Troy Glaus' drive to right-center. The harsh wind became a factor late in th game, carrying a handful of easy outs away from Ordonez.

Nate Robertson, who took Kenny Rogers' spot in the rotation, allowed two runs and seven hits over 5.2 innings, exiting after Aaron Hill's two-run bomb.

Ivan Rodriguez, who was hitless in the opener, went 4-for-5 for the Tigers while Carlos Guillen added two RBIs.
